How to Prepare for a Tarot Reading (From a Pro Reader)

How to Prepare for a Tarot Reading (From a Pro Reader)

Whether it’s your very first tarot reading or your fiftieth, showing up prepared can make your experience more meaningful, clear, and empowering. As a professional tarot reader, I’ve guided hundreds of clients through all kinds of questions, from love and career to big life transitions, and I can tell you: a little prep goes a long way.

Below, I’m sharing my top tips to help you get the most out of your reading (whether it’s with me or any trusted reader).

✨ 1. Get Clear on Your Intentions

You don’t need to have a perfectly polished question when you book your reading, but having a general intention can really help.

Ask yourself:

  • What area of life am I seeking clarity on? (Love, career, spiritual growth, etc.)
  • Am I looking for insight, validation, advice, or next steps?
  • What’s been weighing on my heart or mind lately?

Having this clarity sets the energetic tone for the reading and helps your reader tune in with focus and care.

✨ 2. Release the Need for “Yes or No” (Unless That’s the Point)

While yes/no readings have their place, tarot is at its best when it helps you explore the why, how, and what’s next of a situation. Be open to receiving insight that might go deeper than a simple answer — the cards often reveal things you hadn’t considered yet.

If you do want a clear yes/no, communicate that so your reader can use an appropriate method.

✨ 3. Reflect, Don’t Predict

Tarot isn’t fortune-telling. It’s a conversation between you, your reader, and the energy you’re carrying into your life. Think of it like a mirror, not a crystal ball. The more open you are to reflection, the more powerful your reading will feel.

✨ 4. Be Open to Messages You Didn’t Expect

Sometimes clients come in hoping to hear one thing and leave with a message they needed more. Trust that what comes through is what Spirit, your guides, and the Universe want you to know right now. Even uncomfortable truths are delivered for your growth and healing.

✨ 5. Prepare Your Space (Even for Virtual Readings)

If you’re meeting over Zoom or receiving a written or recorded reading, set the tone:

  • Light a candle, burn some incense, or create a cozy space.
  • Bring a notebook or journal to capture messages.
  • Take a few deep breaths and ground yourself before the session begins.

A calm, intentional space helps you receive with an open heart.

✨ 6. Ask Follow-Up Questions if You Need To

A good reader (including me!) wants you to leave with clarity, not confusion. If something isn’t landing or feels unclear, speak up. The cards are there to support you — it’s a conversation, not a lecture.

✨ 7. Be Honest with Yourself

Come as you are. You don’t have to impress your reader or hold it all together. If you’re in a messy, uncertain place, that’s okay. Tarot meets you where you are and helps you find your way forward.
